His training methods combine the techniques of riding masters such as Xenophon (400 B. C.) and Nuno Oliveira along with contemporary mentors such as Ray Hunt, Tom Dorrance and Buck Brannaman. Using the insight he gained from these distinguished horsemen along his own life history, Spates developed Natural Responses Horsemanship.
In 1992, Pete brought his unique program to Southern California, were he helped thousands of people and horses. Although based in California with a satellite ranch in Arizona, Pete travels worldwide to locations where his expertise is needed. Spates also conducts professional clinics and demonstrations on a regular basis. In addition, he offers on-site training at Hidden Horse Ranch in Ramona, CA.
Spates enjoys the role of both teacher and student. Pete’s experience as a college instructor gave him special insight about how to best present important information to individual students. Acknowledging that different people need to hear the same things in different ways, Spates adapts his format to ensure that folks understand exactly what he is trying to get across. As a student, Spates is always studying and seeking to expand his knowledge base.
Born on a ranch in Southern California, MaryAnn Berndt found herself in an animal lover's paradise. At age 2 MaryAnn began riding horses and took several English and Western riding courses; now she is fortunate enough to have a career doing what she loves - working and training horses with her life partner Pete Spates.
In the mid-1980’s MaryAnn began competitive horseback riding and quickly became a contender amongst some of the west coast’s cattle workers. MaryAnn also has experience with ranch sorting and roping.
In the mid-1990’s MaryAnn managed a 40 horse boarding facility in Southern California. During her employment, she studied under large animal vets and took several classes on veterinary medicine. Although MaryAnn is not a veterinarian, she believes it is important to understand not only the fundamentals of horsemanship, but the basic understanding of medical care for horses. As a result of the fascinating medical care learning, MaryAnn pursued and studied horse nutrition.
With MaryAnn’s hunger for knowledge and her constant pursuit of becoming a better horse care provider, she met Pete Spates. Since 1998, MaryAnn has worked side-by-side with Pete learning his techniques and perfecting her natural talent with horses.
Throughout her years of training and apprentice work with Pete Spates, MaryAnn has developed a wide range of horsemanship skills that she shares with her Arizona and California clients; the most valuable and sot after skill is her talent to load troubled horses into trailers. MaryAnn has perfected her skill and ability to teach others how to trailer load troubled horses with ease and confidence.
